Happy New Year!!!

Weekly Dev Update #35

 Week of Jan 4, 2021

This week at Mutant…

it’s a New Year! 2020 was full of challenges but dang it went by in a flash. We’re just getting back to the grind after most of us took a healthy little break. Hopefully you all had a good holiday season and are hard at work with your resolutions.

Kaiju Fishing: MOUSE AND KEYBOARD IMMINENT We had wanted to get this out before the New Year, but it didn’t quite come together in a way we felt did the controls justice. We’re polishing as I type, so it’ll be done very, very soon. We’re excited for those of you who played the Demo to try the game with this input available and hope this vastly improves the experience! Stay tuned.

Clash of Command: Huzzah! We're happy to announce that Clash of Command has its Steam Store page and we're making steady progress on the conversion from Flash to the new Unity frontend and AWS server based backend. Look for monthly updates on Clash development over the next year.

WE ALSO PLAY GAMES

Since this is our first update of the New Year, we don’t have a ton to share about progress so I thought it’d be fun to take this moment to check in with the team and see what else they did last year. We are game developers but we also enjoy playing games from our fellow creators. So I posed the question to the squad and here’s what kept the Mutant Entertainment team busy during quarantine!

Sarah, our lead artist, played a lot of Animal Crossing, Sea of Thieves, Terraria, Planet Zoo, and Red Dead Redemption 2. She’s a crafter and explorer for sure so these all make sense! Animal Crossing was a huge favorite in my apartment as well during the early weeks of quarantine so that’s a great choice.

Zach, our lead gameplay programmer, was catching up on 2018’s God of War - an excellent choice. He admits that he doesn’t beat single-player games often so the fact that he wants to play it again really says a lot! Outside that, he says Apex Legends held his attention for most of the year, which I can relate to. A little competition goes a long way and that game has some snappy, fast action!

Jeff, our boss and lead programmer, is our in-house strategy gamer. While he pined for a PS5, he was in the tactical weeds with Into the Breach, Rimworld, Civilization, and Out of the Park Baseball.

And I played a lot of action-adventure open world-y types. My favorite was Ghost of Tsushima (I ain’t ashamed to say that I cried SO much) but Last of Us Part Two is right up there as well. My surprises of the year was actually enjoying Bloodborne and Resident Evil 2, neither of which are genres I’d normally go to. 2020 was wild. haha Meanwhile I still spend way too much time in Destiny 2; the new raid was a lot of fun to run with some friends.

And that's the round up. We’re ready for a new year and have a lot of energy coming back to Kaiju Fishing. Let us know what games held your attention this year and we’ll see you in the next update!
